A driving instructor's calendar has quirks most booking tools ignore. Lessons start at the student's home or school, not your office. Students want different lengths depending on how close they are to their test. Many are teenagers whose parents do the booking. And every lesson ends somewhere other than where the next one begins.
The goal is a week spent teaching on the road, not arranging lessons by text between them.
Here's how to set up online booking that handles all of that, so you stop scheduling lessons by text between lessons.
One lesson type, several lengths
Rather than three nearly identical session types, create one 'Driving lesson' and let students choose the length when they book: 60, 90, or 120 minutes. Each length gets its own slot on your calendar, so a two-hour lesson never squeezes into a one-hour gap.
Then add session types for the jobs that are genuinely different:
| Session type | Length | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Driving lesson | 60, 90, or 120 min | Student picks the length |
| Mock test | 60 min | Test route practice under test conditions |
| Test day | 120 min | Warm-up lesson, then the test. Limit to one a day |
| Free intro call | 15 min, phone or video | For parents with questions before booking |
Collect the pickup address with the booking
Set the location to in person with a name like 'Pickup at your address', and add intake questions:
- •Pickup address (long answer, required).
- •Student's name, if a parent is booking (short answer).
- •Experience (dropdown: Never driven, Some practice, Test booked).
- •Permit or provisional license confirmed (checkbox, required).
The checkbox doesn't replace checking the permit in person, but it stops bookings from students who aren't allowed on the road yet.
Leave drive time between lessons
A lesson that ends across town means the next pickup isn't instant. Add a 15 to 30 minute buffer after each lesson so students can't book you back to back from opposite ends of your area. A minimum notice of a few hours stops same-hour bookings you can't reach in time.
Weekly students: enroll them or let them book a series
Most learners do best with the same slot each week. You have two ways to set that up, the same ones music teachers use for weekly lessons across a term:
- •Enroll the student yourself from the Students page in your dashboard: pick the weekday, time, and date range, and every weekly lesson is created as a normal booking.
- •Turn on recurring bookings for your lesson type, and the student or parent books the weekly series themselves, up to the number of weeks you allow.
Either way, each lesson has its own reminder and its own reschedule link, so one missed week doesn't break the series.
Protect test days
Test days are long and you can only do so many. A daily limit of one on the test-day session type keeps two tests from landing on the same morning. Ask students to book test day only after you've agreed they're ready, and say so in the description.
Parents in the loop
When a parent books, the confirmation and reminders go to their email. Point out the optional phone field: whoever adds a number gets a text about an hour before the lesson, which helps when the student is the one who needs to be ready at the door.
Taking payment
Set a price on each lesson type and students pay by card through your own Stripe account when they book. If your students pay cash or Zelle, list your direct payment methods instead and mark lessons paid when the money arrives.
Create your free booking page and share the link with your next student instead of a list of times.
Frequently asked questions
Can students choose how long their lesson is?
Yes. Offer several lengths on one lesson type, such as 60, 90, and 120 minutes, and students pick when they book.
How do I get the pickup address?
Add a required long-answer intake question for the pickup address. It arrives with the booking.
Can a student keep the same slot every week?
Yes. Enroll them from the Students page, or turn on recurring bookings so they book the weekly series themselves.
